Richard Hollis Helms

Founder and Chief Executive

"In my career, I was never satisfied that those responsible for delivering technology to me really understood my need, for surely if they had, they would have worked harder to deliver what seemed to me to be the obvious. I remember being told, 'If you don’t see it on the shelf, don’t ask for it.'

That guidance resulted in an erroneous assessment that all needs were being met because no one was asking for anything other than what was on the shelf. Soon, nothing worthwhile was on the shelf. But while the first principal of technology development must be that it is essential to have the right people, the second is insuring institutional things do not prevent the right technologists from achieving their goals. I am fortunate in that many of those things that prevented technology from reaching me no longer apply. Ntrepid benefits from over $36 million in investments in new technology, people and insights. No one is telling us to live with what is on the shelf. Unfortunately, now I have few excuses for not delivering technology that can make a difference.

Richard Helms is the founder and Chief Executive of Ntrepid Corporation. After a nearly 30-year career in the Central Intelligence Agency, he founded Abraxas Corporation. It was sold 10 years later but retained 145 engineers and product development lines going back years. Ntrepid Corporation was then formed to solve extremely difficult product challenges. Those product lines are now known as Ion, Passages, Nfusion, and Timestream, ... and MetalGear. Just kidding. We have never had a MetalGear product, and suggestions that we have are the result of a misreading and an inaccurate description of contracted work.

In Nov. 2006, Richard won Ernst & Young’s National Entrepreneur of the Year award in Emerging Technology. A graduate of American University in Washington, D.C., he holds a master’s degree in national security policy and a bachelor’s degree in international relations and economic development policy. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Dean of the School of International Service. An avid aviator, Richard has built two experimental aircraft.

Sharon Shepherd

VP of Finance

"Early in my work career I had been exposed to numbers and the importance of how they are all interrelated, how to interpret them and how to get the correct financial picture. I found the possibilities of a career in finance and accounting limitless and sought to help others with the confusing world of 'bean counting.'

As the Corporate Controller, I not only report on the financial health of Ntrepid, but also have an active role as part of the Senior Management Team in the forecast of where Ntrepid is headed and what the finance/accounting team can do to support the Ntrepid business initiatives. Together as a team, we can accomplish great things! I am very fortunate to be part of such an outstanding leadership group."

Teddy Lindsey

Chief Technology Officer

"Before you can solve a problem, simply understanding the technical challenges is not enough. You need to be able to see through the status quo and identify the true challenges, which may not always be technological in nature.

My philosophy around building products is that simplicity, elegance and design are just as important as functionality. No matter how powerful your solution is, if it's too complex for your user, it's essentially useless. What you leave out of a product can be just as important as what you put in and great discretion must be used to keep a product focused and streamlined."

Lance Cottrell

Chief Scientist

"Satisfaction is the path to stagnation. While working on open source anonymity tools in the early 1990s, it became obvious that the existing tools had clear and well-understood vulnerabilities, yet they were going unaddressed.

I took it upon myself to architect and implement an entirely new class of email anonymity tools called Mixmaster. By 1995, Mixmaster and other tools were highly effective and widely deployed but actively user hostile to any but the most technical person. I started Anonymizer to provide high-end security, which would be easily accessible to the least technical user.

I relish working closely with customers. Understanding their needs drives the direction of our innovation. Invention should not be about navel gazing, but addressing real needs.

I am constantly driven to solve the next problem, address the next threat, enable the next capability."

These shared values have led to an uncommon degree of trust and collaborative potential, and have resulted in some exceptional accomplishments. It is incredibly rewarding watching team members succeed and take on greater responsibilities within the team and corporately."

Chris Bertolero

Director of Network Operations Center

"In my working career, I have modeled my leadership style towards the way I coach. I have been coaching baseball for over 30 years, and I find that treating your workers as your players on a team has been the most beneficial in getting who I lead ready to 'play.'

They call it coaching, but it is really teaching. You just don't tell them you show them the reasons. This provides a team atmosphere, and to have a good working NOC, you need to have a good team working together."
