Ransomware Attack on The Weather Channel
On Thursday, April 18, The Weather Channel (TWC) became the latest victim of a ransomware attack. So far, the network has only described the event that forced their live programming off the air as a “malicious software attack.” Although The Weather Channel has not confirmed specifics, general consensus has reasoned that TWC fell victim to ransomware, in which malware blocks access to data or systems until some sort of ransom is paid.
As technology advances, more television broadcasting companies have moved toward using IP video distribution networks and cloud-based processing systems, leaving them vulnerable to cyber-attacks. In addition to being disruptive, attacks on public broadcasting channels create public safety issues, allowing malicious actors the ability to control the broadcast and/or push their own messaging.
Federal law enforcement is investigating this incident, and it remains to be seen whether The Weather Channel will release more details. This event should serve as a reminder that any company—no matter how innocuous—could be targeted with technology-based attacks. Everyone using modern technology, from the internet to cloud-based applications, should take every precaution in protecting their data, network, and systems against cybercriminals.
