The Evolution of Privacy on the Internet: Securiosity Podcast

We all know the internet has changed drastically from its inception to now, and with these changes have come necessary shifts in security, policy, and the way we access various types of information. In “Back to Your Regularly Scheduled Podcast,” an episode of Securiosity, Lance Cottrell, Chief Scientist at Ntrepid, discusses the evolution of the internet and cyber security. Check out the full podcast to hear more about internet privacy, online investigations, the dark web, and the evolution of cybercrime.

Over the years, the internet has changed from flat to dynamic, and, thus, the way we manage our attribution has also had to evolve. With a flat internet, it was fine to just hide IP addresses from prying eyes. Now, the internet is dynamic, virtually every element is customized to the individual user, and we are all sharing massive amounts of personal information at all times.

Not only has the amount of information available on the internet increased, but our ways of accessing it have changed. Accounts and platforms with information stored behind logins means that law enforcement and investigators have had to both change their way of thinking about OSINT and learn how to successfully create and maintain profiles for these sites to gain access.

All of these changes have necessitated new policies and legislations surrounding the internet and how we access it, policies that essentially need to change as quickly as the internet does. In addition to legislation, cyber investigations and law enforcement have also had to adapt to the changing environment, as cybercrime has grown and evolved right along with the internet. All of the new ways that criminals conduct cybercrime must be met with new methods of finding and stopping them, as the internet continues to grow and change in ways we can only imagine.
